Suggested Good Blast cleaning Nozzle Practice

  • Your new carbide lined nozzle is supplied with a nozzle washer. Place the supplied washer securely on threaded end of nozzle & up against end of abrasive blast hose in nozzle holder. When installed & maintained correctly the nozzle washer will help prevent wear at the nozzle entrance.

  • Always inspect equipment & replace worn hose, nozzle holders, washers & nozzles.

  • To maintain productivity always replace nozzle when inside bore has worn to one size larger than originally supplied.

  • Always point nozzle at work surface. Never point blast nozzle at any person including yourself.

  •  OSHA stipulates that blast nozzles be fitted with a means of powering down the nozzle in the event of a problem. This control valve (deadman's handle) should power down the nozzle on release of hand pressue.  Please refer to OSHA 29CFR 1910.244 (b)

  • To avoid injury/harm when blast cleaning, always follow all statutory & other established safety rules covering blast cleaning operating procedures.

  • Always wear approved protective clothing & use approved safety equipment when blast cleaning. Always use NIOSH approved supplied air respirators and protection when blast cleaning. For more info refer to the NIOSH web site: www.cdc.gov/niosh and OSHA web site: www.osha.gov

  • To avoid injury/harm when blast cleaning, always follow all statutory & other established safety rules covering the selection & use of equipment & media.

  • When cleaning nozzles do not bang them against anything as this may crack or fracture the carbide liner.

  • Always check carbide lined nozzles before using for excessive wear, cracked or broken liners. Always replace nozzles when you see the liner has been damaged, cracked or otherwise compromised.

  • Before screwing nozzle & holder together, clean threads of grit etc. Make sure you use/replace the washer.

  • To securely install nozzle in holder there must be at least 70% of threads engaged in holder i.e. a minimum of 8 threads on a 1-1/4" NPSM or 4 threads on a contractor style nozzle. The more threads engaged in holder the stronger the nozzle installation.
  • Hose should be cut squarely & installed in holder so as to allow bottom of nozzle with washer attached to seat firmly up against hose. There must be 100% contact between nozzle bottom and top of hose.
  • When installing nozzle holder on hose, allow for nozzle to be wound down though holder so (1) 70% of nozzle threads can be engaged  in holder and (2) there is good seal between bottom of nozzle and top of hose.
